Clematis - Queen of Climbers...
Clematis is one of the most popular plants in the UK and no wonder! This extremely versatile plant can be grown in the ground or in pots, can be grown up against a wall or a fence, on trellis and obelisks, over arches and pergolas and even through trees and shrubs. With scented varieties, evergreen varieties and varying sizes, there's a clematis to suit every garden.
There are over 250 species and cultivars known presently with more being discovered every year. Over 80 of these species and cultivars have gained the Royal Horticultural Societys' Award of Garden Merit. It's easy to see why clematis are sometimes referred to as the 'queen of climbers' with their superb growth rate and spectacular display of flowers.
Remember, the secret to successful hybrid type clematis is to bury them so the root ball is 1 inch to 1.5 inches below the level of the soil. This allows them to shoot freely from the ground. All clematis like cool roots. Planting around their base with smaller plants or alternatively covering the soil with bark or decorative stones helps to protect them.
