Our mantra this season is Plan it, Plant it, which means plant now throughout the autumn so that shrubs, fruit and perennials have time to settle their roots into the ground over the winter and wake up next spring with a head start.
While the ground is still warm and the air is becoming damper, this is nature's natural planting time. So start by clearing away old foilage of those summer perennials and make some space for your new planting scheme before the ground becomes too wet or frosty.
September heralds the onset of autumn, when gold, orange red and plum shades abound; winter pansies and those charming mini cyclamen are a must have for the front of your border or as a combination in your tubs and baskets.
Trees are just starting to put on their autumn shades and now is the perfect time for fruit trees and bushes. A firm favourite for Raglan is the NEW Bramley Apple 'Bountiful'; which will bear fruit of large cooking apples on a compact plant so ideal for the smaller garden.
Grasses look great in the border and are at their best in September; their misty plumes soften any planting scheme with superb form and structure and work really well amongst a colourful display of Chrysanthemums.
And remember if you need advice on your autumn planting scheme why not pop along to the Centre and ask for our experienced Plant Team...at Raglan we're always happy to help!
