Gardening Tips for March

What To Plant In March

March is when things really start to get going in the garden. The days are getting longer, the soil is warming up, and there’s plenty you can be getting on with – whether you’ve got a big garden or just a few pots on the patio.

Here’s what to focus on this month.

Outside

Now’s the time to get your spring colour in. Primroses, violas, and pansies can all go straight into beds, borders, or containers – they’re tough enough to handle any late frosts and they’ll give you weeks of colour. If your borders are looking a bit bare after winter, these are the quickest way to brighten things up.

March is also a great month for planting veg. Broad beans, peas, shallots, and onion sets can all go directly into the ground now. They’re easy to grow, even if you’re a complete beginner, and there’s nothing quite like eating something you’ve grown yourself. If you’ve got space, consider putting in some raspberry canes too – plant them once and they’ll reward you with fruit for years.

It’s a good time to plant shrubs and hedging as well, while the soil is still moist and the plants have the whole growing season ahead of them to settle in. Roses, climbers, and perennials like lavender and geraniums can all go in this month.

On a Windowsill

If you want to get ahead with summer crops, March is the month to start sowing seeds indoors. Tomatoes, peppers, and chillies all need a warm windowsill and a few weeks of growing time before they're ready to go outside after the last frosts. Sweet peas can also be started indoors now for a gorgeous display later in the summer.

All you need is a propagation tray and some seeds to get started.

Don’t Forget

March is a good time to feed your lawn if it’s looking tired after winter, and to top-dress any containers that have been sitting since last year with fresh compost. If you’ve got spring bulbs coming up, give them a liquid feed to help them put on a good show.
